WEEK 11 WRAP UP

Marvelous Maine has now come to a closure and though we thought that it would be such a long time to get here, a lot of super good ideas were brought to our attention, and we feel that it was worth it. It seems that this program has opened up so many resources that we can share with our patrons.  Knowing that there is so much one can learn from this program and hopefully be able to do more research on our own time.

My biggest discovery was the feeling that as an elderly person I was excited just to be part of this program and knowing that I, too, could find such information a valuable tool for the future.

Helping others is really what a librarian needs to do most of the time and I feel that this knowledge will be really helpful and am grateful for this exposure to so many subjects.  Thank you.

LLABRECK

WEEK 10 EbscotHost–

Delved into the list of data bases and found that Library Information contained such important information that I was a little astounded.  Indexes on Science and technologies coontained more than 560 Core Jourmals, nearly 50 Priorty Journals, and approximately 125 selective journals.  Plus books, research reports and proceedings.  Subject coverage includes Librarianship, classification, caloging, and information management plus much more. Coverage in the database extends back as far as the mid 1960’s.

It seems to me that other people’s “blogs” were just as succesful in their research and probably amazed at the wide variety of information as I felt.

Regarding the formerly NetLibrary, which is now under Ebsco eBooks, might very well be a solution to getting a better variety of the most important books to help our patrons.  I feel that there is a need for better collections  including our Maine authors and other writings about our great state.

WEEK 9 LEARNING EXPRESS

After I set up an account, I browsed through and found the Learning Express Library. I chose a subject which I thought quite interesting.  A paragraph later and clicked on the Test Score. I found out that I wasn’t prepared to their standard.  Surprise!  Surprise!  Meanwhile, they printed a seven page reply to my little paragraph.  Needless to say their version was most interesting and made me want to go back to school or learn a little more.

Next experience was to do a Job Search and Workplace Skills  and added one of the courses to my center, Business Writing. Taking notes on the course of my choice and finding one on adult improvements seemed appropriate for me.  Would thinking that one can possibly learn at any age, be a dream, with all the help that is available on demand?

Marvelous Maine Invitational has opened up a resource that has many of us show an interest.  The fact that we are not tested and graded allows us to do all we can and find that there is more to learn.

WEEK 8 GENEALOGY RESOURCES–ANCESTRY LIBRARY

ANCESTRY LIBRARY
You were right about being on record even though we are still alive. The options seem to be so numerous and interesting that one really wants to spend more time into the program. Birth, Death, Marriage are vital records that can provide details about very important milestones in one,s life.

Ancestry Library search into my folks’ records, dating back into the 1890’s, was an awesome find and proved to be quite pleasant and surprising.
The county which my parents were living when I was born is recorded and because Aroostook is so close to another country,
it is easy to see why our language might differ a little but we understand each other well enough.
Unites States Census for 1930 contains records for approximately 123 million Americans. The census gives us a into the lives of Americans in that year and contains information about a households,s family members, occupation, citizenship and military service.
Need I tell you that I found this lesson very interesting and want to pursue a little more as time will allow.

WEEK 7– INTERESTING HEALTH INFORMATION

This week has to be top news for everyone, and a good subject to learn new information.Consumer reports have included one of the finest magazine out today to get the latest research especially for the seniors. The” AARP” magazine keeps you up to date on many important issues especially on health.

Choosing only one disease will be a challenge for  Marvelous Maine offers so much more.Looking up one of the disease that is affecting one of three adults today made me realize that I wanted to learn more.  The problem seems to be that if you had Chickenpox as a child, the Shingles virus is already inside you.  The simple fact that one in three people will get Shingles in their lifetime.  The same virus that causes Chickenpox also causes Shingles and if you’ve ever had Chickenpox, like 98% of adults in the U.S., this virus never leaves your body.  Instead, it stays in your nervous system.  With each passing decade, there’s a greater chance the virus will emerge as Shingles–a blistering rash that may bring deep, penetrating pain. Unlike Chickenpox, Shingles is painful and can lead to long-term nerve paine. The only resource to combat this is to get inoculated early.

Medline Plus offers even greater and informative study on Drugs and Supplements while allowing us to view and study the different specific medicines which we are more familiar with.

The Videos offers a wide knowledge and truly a new approach to a certain disease that makes us aware of what our body is experiencing. Playing it over again was very rewarding for though it is a fast pace program, you can always repeat the procedure.

MARVELOUS MAINE INVITATIONAL #6

After doing a Visual Search Option on FM Radio, the general assessment of the Independent Ethnic Radio fired up my interest.  With radar system and wireless communications broadcasting stations in Kenya as well as Ethnic Groups, there was so much more to the global programs than I ever imagined other than the good old USA.  With Legislators and Regulators, Broadcasting policy, communications was quite astonishing. Including full articles and graphic perspection and Map Navigator this knowledge made searching much easier.

The Econ Lit proved to be most helpful in doing Search Options and Assesstment.  With Academic Journal, Criteria Decision making risk and uncertainty, communication for spatial search and job search a valuable tool.

Diagnosing labor markets in th US and Europe was accessible to compare the markets and reservation wages of first and second generation migrants.  Resources for small businesses and the insights , resource collections was made simple by indexing so many topoics inclluding company histories.

Discovering Exercise led me to a well known establishment where my elderly sister was cared for.  Cedar Ridge Nursing  and Rehabilitation Center caught my attention as to how prosperous  this nursing home can be. The information relesed how much they take in yearly, stating how many employees are on duty which I can attest to this fact having been there for many visits. Related companies and Historical facts was helpful but I did not see their expenses including how much taxes they paid last year.

The Value Line Exercise with Investment Survey was a great find to explore reports, selection and options, summary and index and much information on investing and holding stocks.  The data, tools, ranks, analyses with renown publications gave much needed insight to specific profiles and in very latest update on the stocks and bond markets.

WEEK 5 NOVELIST PLUS–EXCITING!

Quite often we are asked the exact questions pertaining to authors or titles which have our patrons interested in concerning a particular susbject or author at our Public Library in Winslow, Maine.

The Basic Search Bar helped me when I chose one of my favorite subjects dealing with Acadia.  My knowledge never seemed to be adequate and felt that with my family,s  genealogy, there needed to be an author with 4 stars to his name to meet my expectation. Search Box and Series were instrumental as well as Sort By and View.

Helping a patron to find authors and subjects proved to be highly effective and will certainly be as entertaining for me as well as the happy folks.

By printing the specific information they will be able to peruse through Library an hopefully find more joy in this knowledge.

This was indeed a wonderful program and enjyed the new avenues to help people.

WEEK FOUR PROMISES TO BE QUITE INTERESTING!

Creating knitting publications offers primary goals to bring knitters a variety of fun-to-knit projects that use familliar stitches.

Periodicals offered publications containing various patterns and information–dealing with beginning to learn how to knit and dealing with advanced patterns.Though I did not see too many pictures there were many avenues to research.

Meanwhile my objective was to see more of the simple pleasures of knitting useful articles which we truly is a neccesity here in Maine—such as keeping the feet warm the hands and head. Local schools and Homeless Shelters are so grateful to receive these in any size. to make any of these articles does not require a whole lot of time to make and many super nice friends are eager to help in donating the yarn, bless them for their generosity! Just knowing that some little person is kept warm or a needy person gives one the ambition to do this and you need only have to know the simple stitches such as knit and pearl!

week 3

Ditching Politics on 9/11 as printed in the Morning Sentinel , Waterville Maine

It,s been a decade since the attack at The World Trade Center 0n September 11 which killed 3000 people. The politician’s involvement in this somber occasion is on many people’s mind, especially to those whose loved onse were in this dreadful disaster.

The New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg is the National September 11 Memorial & museum
Chairman–and stated that this year, only relatives would be reading the victim’s names, though politicians may attend.

“Honoring the victim;s and their families should be free of politics in an election year”, stated the Memorial President Joe Daniels.

Controversy over this decision will always create some friction but, as the Boston Globe wrote in an editorial, “It is time”!

I totally agree with this–how do you feel about it?
